With all the excitement Stars Wars VII is generating, I’ve decided to talk about my wish to visit one of our favourite scenes in the movie franchise. And I’m not talking about a board set like the ones in Hollywood. I’m talking about Tatooine.
The real one.
According to wikipedia (which is like, the best source ever), Tatouine is a city in Tunisia which was once inhabited by the Berber population who crafted cave dwellings to stay cool. Here we thought George Lucas’ imagination was superior to ours. Alas, the Berbers called dibs on these extraordinary structures a millennium ago.
It’s also home to the Lars Homestead where Luke ate, fixed R2D2 and saw the corpses of his relatives all in the course of two days.
Ready to travel there now? Of course you do. I’d recommend carrying your old Luke Skywalker costume (Anakin Skywalker costume for the kids) to get the real Star Wars experience. Tunisia will welcome you with open arms. In fact, they have hotels nearby so you can recover from your geek-gasm at seeing the remains of the Star Wars sets.
Yes, I too believe George Lucas left remnants to keep the Tunisian tourist industry alive.
You may have heard that story going around that Tatouine was captured by ISIS. With the tremendous reach Star Wars has, I wouldn’t be surprised if some die-hard Star Wars fan/ISIS militant thought it was the ultimate terrorist dream to take over a beloved Star Wars set. But it’s just a rumor, guys. You can safely visit the town to play some good ol’ Star Wars RPG.
